With the advent of the New Year it’s time to have a look back at what’s happened and what we’ve learned during the previous year. I started this blog two years ago and it’s important for me to reflect on its performance in 2013 and make a comparison with 2012. Only so will I be able to see what’s worked and what hasn’t, what you’ve liked and read the most and so this will allow me to focus exactly on that content that you, my readers, are most interested in.

2013 was the year of many firsts in my life – many of those events I’ve shared with you here:

  • I graduated with a Double Degree Bachelor in International Business, having submitted my second dissertation about social media for sustainability communications.
  • I started my first full-time job as a Social Media Account Manager at Brandzeichen – a Communications Consultancy in Düsseldorf, part of the Ketchum network.
  • I published my first book, and then my second too, only at the age of 23.
  • I was mentioned in the bestselling PR and social media book Share This Too as the only woman among the five students listed as early social media adopters and pioneers in “making a name for themselves and kick-starting their careers through blogging and other forms of media.”
  • I created yet another infographic, and then another one, which I am very proud of as I have so managed to improve my skills in developing visual content.
  • I had the first contributed post published on my blog after my Google Page Rank jumped up significantly – this is, I think, the first step towards monetising the blog.

At the end of my first year of blogging

22 Exceptional Quotes about the Future of Business by Brian Solis

My previous blog post about the psychology of social commerce was inspired and pretty much directed by one of the chapters from Brian Solis’ latest book: “What’s the Future of Business?: Changing the Way Businesses Create Experiences” (#WTF). I mentioned there that I was going to share with you my impressions from the entire book and this is what this post is about. (To see how his other work and books have inspired me, check out this blog post here too.)

Brian Solis has a way with words. His thoughts are so brilliant and well put that I find it extremely difficult to rephrase them (bear in mind, I am not native in English), so I’m never happy with the outcome. Which is why I chose to share with you my favourite quotes from his book. I hope you enjoy them! And please do tell me which ones are your favourite. Feel free to suggest more in addition to the list I’ve compiled! :)

How NOT to do Customer Service on Social Media - o2 Germany

[fa icon="calendar'] 06-Sep-2013 10:07:00 / by Iliyana Stareva posted in Social Media, Personal Development

Because I work in social media and communications I know how difficult it is to deal with negative reviews of products or clients, which is why I purposefully try not to express my anger or dissatisfaction with such on the Social Web. However, I recently had a terrible experience (well, I am still having it, as it has not yet been resolved) and it is such a good example of how NOT to do customer service via social media that I couldn’t resist telling you about it.

First, I’d like to ask you a question: Was there a time when you didn’t have internet at home for a while? How long was that and how did you feel?

I just set a record – over two weeks without internet connection! I’ve never been without internet at home for so long… Well, yes, I do have internet on my smartphone, but that’s not enough – you just can’t do everything on it, in many cases a laptop is naturally the preferable device, like for example when writing and publishing a blog post. (If you wonder how I am posting this story, I bought one of those internet USB sticks from Tchibo for this month, although the limit is almost gone and it’s unbelievably slow…)

So, what happened?

Being a Share This Too Pioneer

This is not a regular blog post that you are about to read. With the following I want to share with you one of the proudest moments and biggest achievements of my life that just confirms my passion for social media and PR and my drive and motivation to have a stellar career in the industry.

What am I talking about? Well, I am mentioned as a student pioneer in building a personal brand online in one of the most awaited books of the year on social media and PR.

The book in question is the follow-up of the best-selling Share This, published by The Chartered Institute for Public Relations – the UK’s professional body for PR practitioners. The sequel, Share This Too, is a practical book, written by 24 public relations professionals to address the use of social media for PR and offer guidelines for various areas such as online media relations, measuring and monitoring etc., which practitioners can apply in their work. The foreword of the book was written by Brian Solis – a pioneer in the field (whom I am a big fan of), which only shows how important this book for the industry is. Furthermore, the book is already a best seller being the number 1 in Amazon Hot New Releases as well as among the top 20 PR books. It is also attracting a lot of online buzz.

I am proud to be part of one of the book chapters,

I don’t think I’ve told you this before, but I am a big fan of Brian Solis. He is a well-known thought leader in the area of social media, communications, technology and business and I have so far learned a lot from him. I follow his blog and I’ve also read all of his books, apart from the latest one, which is on my reading list. I have quoted him a few times in previous posts, but now I thought I’d share with you my favourite Brian Solis quotes.

Here we go:

"Social media is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers. It is the shift from a broadcast mechanism, one-to-many, to a many-to-many model, rooted in conversations between authors, people, and peers."

"Social media is less about technology and more about anthropology, sociology, and ethnography."
