I recently reviewed Gini Dietrich's new book"Spin Sucks: Communication and Reputation Management in the Digital Age (Que Biz-Tech)" for online PR magazine Behind the Spin. (If you missed the piece, head over to Behind the Spin and have a look here, it will get you excited about this post.) In my review I conclude that the book is "a great read for people starting their PR careers, but also for those who want to understand the collision of old and new communications channels and the power of digital".

I really enjoyed reading the book partly because of the way it was written. Gini has a very clear, but also attention-grabbing style of writing, which you must have noticed if you've been reading the Spin Sucks blog. (If not, start now!)

And so while scrolling the pages on my Kindle, I made notes of the passages I really liked, which turned out to be a pretty long collection of quotes that I want to share with you.

Below are my favourite attention-getters and learnings from Gini. I hope you enjoy them!

How Visual Content Can Boost Your Traditional PR Efforts

The press release is dead! That's what many have been saying since the emergence of social media. The press release is still here though – perhaps somewhat advanced and taking up new forms such as social media release of video release etc. Dying or not, the press release in whatever form is still a valuable tool to transmit information and announce company messages. To have these messages heard, or in this case read, you need to make sure that you not only have written a well-thought-of and structured release, but you need to grab people's attention.

And that's where text might not always suffice.

People are visual creatures. We consume images 60,000 faster than text; we remember 80% of what we see and do, and only 20% of what we read.

Perhaps this is one reason why visual content can increase your press release visibility by 5,000!

Surprised? It's a massive number, I know, but it is based on a recent analysis of over 1 million press releases.

PR Newswire discovered that in contrast to text-only pieces visual content improves the performance of press releases enormously:

Attention PR Pros! The YouTubers are Taking Over the Beauty Industry

We all know what blogging is, but have you heard of vlogging – the abbreviation for video blogging? When was the last time you watched a tutorial on YouTube, for example a video explaining how to make a trendy hairstyle or how to build a website? We have all seen such videos, so even if you didn't know the term (and now you do), I'm sure you have experienced a vlog (i.e. video blog).

Vlogging - advanced blogging

What this means is that there are many people out there who, instead of writing long pieces and publishing in text format on a blog, create interactive video content on private YouTube channels, aiming at adding value for subscribers and not readers.

Among PR professionals these people are known as vloggers (i.e. video bloggers), or as they prefer to call themselves YouTubers.

Especially in the beauty industry YouTubers have become extremely influential making a pretty nice living only via vlogging. Sounds interesting? It sure is and this is what we are about to explore.

How to Become a Break Through Storyteller [Infographic]

[fa icon="calendar'] 19-May-2014 09:00:00 / by Iliyana Stareva posted in Public Relations, Storytelling

Last Friday I had the pleasure of participating in a brilliant workshop about storytelling, held by Petra Sammer, Chief Creative Officer at Ketchum - the PR agency the company I work for is proudly part of. As you have probably noticed, I have lately become quite fascinated with storytelling. It is currently my most favourite writing, research and learning topic, so coincidence or not, the half-day training took place very much at the right time, fitting perfectly to finishing my storytelling post series (at least for now).

I absolutely loved the workshop! Petra is such a nice person; she's extremely knowledgeable on the topic and she definitely has a way with words - she kept us interested during the whole time, not just with the stories she had chosen to show us, but the way she presented them.

Thinking about how best to present my impressions and considering one major takeaway from the session - the growing power of visual storytelling - I got a little creative myself. Making use of some of the slides from the workshop and the notes I made, I put together an infographic that summarises the key learnings from the training. You can see it at the end of this piece.

As I couldn't put absolutely everything in the infographic, here are a few more attention getters:

The Future of PR is Socially Responsible

The biggest change the PR industry has even faced is social media. With the massive embracement of social networks in our daily lives, it became possible for ordinary people to influence corporate behaviour with just one tweet, one Facebook post or one Instagram photo. Individuals today feel empowered to demand change and expect social consciousness from brands. This has left businesses with no other choice but to meet the triple bottom line balance between environmental, societal and economic concerns.
