how to increase foot traffic to your shop

Everything is online now. My work, my shopping, my social life. Most of everything happens from a screen nowadays. I work remotely, buy what I need with a few clicks, and even the most “in-person” experiences (like trying on clothes) are now just virtual fitting rooms and same-day delivery.

But here’s the thing, there’s still something irreplaceable about walking into a store, discovering something unexpected and leaving with a bag in hand. I kind of miss this more and more. Even the other day I went out to the city centre of where I live just to browse the shops which I hadn't done in so long. While I was walking around, a thought occurred to me. If I put myself in the shoes of the business owners, the real challenge for retailers today isn’t just competing with other stores - it’s competing with convenience.

So, how do you get people off their screens and into your store? I did some research and here are five smart ways to drive foot traffic and make shopping in person worth the trip.

5 Smart Ways to Get More Shoppers Through Your Retail Doors

1. Reward Loyalty, Build Relationships

Attracting customers is one thing. Keeping them coming back? That’s the real game-changer. A loyalty program makes every purchase more rewarding. Offer points that convert into discounts, exclusive perks, or early access to sales. The easier and more enticing your rewards, the more likely customers will keep choosing your store over competitors.

2. Create Excitement with Sales & Promotions

Everyone loves a deal. A well-timed sale or a limited-time offer creates urgency and draws shoppers in. Take it a step further by making your promotions feel exclusive with VIP-only discounts, flash sales, or ‘buy more, save more’ deals to add excitement while moving inventory efficiently.

3. Make Shopping Effortless

The fewer obstacles a customer has to go through to make a purchase, the more likely they will be to part with their money. Make the whole buying process as easy as possible for anyone who enters your store. This means designing your store layout so it is clear and easy to navigate. Customers should be able to find what they want with ease and have some, but not too many, options to consider. Less is more. Also, offer different payment methods, from accepting cash to a Payanywhere point of sale terminal. Your customers will appreciate the convenience and will be more likely to return in the future.

4. Boost Curb Appeal & Make a Statement

First impressions count. If your storefront doesn’t entice, you’re missing out on foot traffic. The whole point is to make your shop impossible to ignore and liven up your curb appeal. Some ideas include:

  • Eye-catching window displays that showcase your bestsellers
  • Seasonal decor that creates an inviting atmosphere
  • A creative chalkboard with cool messages or daily deals

5. Location Matters

If you’re choosing a store location or considering a move, remember: footfall is driven by visibility. High streets, shopping centers, and areas where your target audience already spends time are prime spots. While rent is higher in busy areas, the right location can drive significantly more revenue.
